2020-2021: A Year Through GASC

We believe we speak for everyone when we say that the past year and a half, was an...unusual time. We didn't have any clue about what was going on in our world, but it made us all stronger and better leaders. Let's take a moment and look back at 2020, GASC Edition.

We start our adventure in July, at BLAST! camp. With over several hundred participants, family groups, and Aric Jackson leading us all, it was totally.... a blast! Over the span of 3 days, people from around Georgia grew and expanded their leadership, all from the comfort of their own home. With the addition of family groups, we got to connect and form friendships, make memories, and grow together.

Fast forward to September, GASC implemented a new event, Monthly Meet-Ups. Every month, we would have amazing speakers such as Kate Garnes, Jake Kelfer, and Laymon Hicks talk to us about a wide variety of topics. We had things like being positive during this time, how to become better leaders, and make sure our voices are heard. Little did we know that we had more surprises coming our way.

Raise your hand if you remember Among Us. In November, GASC held its first digital District Conference with the theme - you can guess it - Among Us! Our amazing guest speaker, Kyle Wilkom spoke about how there is no leadership without action. Things will always be hard in the beginning but you have to persevere and get through it. District Conference has definitely taught us that there are leaders among us.

This year, GASC held there first ever leader training program, CSLP. The Certified Student Leadership Program was created to introduce students to a world where they would face challenges and get through them. This program was lead by Kent Julian who took us through a four week journey to becoming even better leaders than when we had started off. This opportunity will available to all member schools this year as well!

And finally... *drumroll please* ... Convention 2021! The theme for this year's Convention was Gotta lead 'em all - Pokémon Style ;)! With over two days of fun, 300+ participants, and one amazing speaker, we can say that Convention was AMAZING!! We had our amazing speaker Scott Backovich talk about how important it is to be kind and how we can create moments - not events. Like BLAST, we kept the social interaction alive and met students from all across Georgia in our family groups. We had many speakers join us to be a part of the Speaker Seminars, including one specifically for the Middle Schools! We can easily say that this was one of the most memorable Conventions ever!

We would also like to congratulate our award winners across Georgia over many categories. It is truly an honor! We would also like to highlight some of the funny backstage moments that took place in the making of this GASC moment!

At convention, the exec board had the opportunity to meet and make this event a success. Both of us would like to take a moment and thank each and every one of the officers! It has been an odd, but amazing year! Thank you all!
